USA Triathlon rule is that the water temperature must be below 78 F in order to use a wetsuit. Does this mean you have to have a wetsuit? No.  Again, if it’s your first time, you should probably make sure you like the sport before you invest a lot of money. Wetsuits can be expensive, but if you keep asking nicely, perhaps you could borrow one from a member that isn’t racing.
